Thinking about working in consulting? You may want to look at INSEAD

Mar 22, 2018

There are many reasons to pursue an MBA, but one of the primary reasons is to pursue a career transition. And many students are looking to transition to management consulting. With great bonuses and post-MBA salaries, it’s no wonder so many MBA graduates end up following through with careers in consulting.

If you’re looking to break in to this industry, you may want to consider INSEAD, where 46% of last year’s graduating class went into consulting. In fact, according to Poets and Quants, 29.8% of INSEAD’s graduating class last year went to just three firms — Bain & Co., McKinsey & Co., and Boston Consulting Group. Among students joining management consultancy, 34% were returning to former employers, meaning the majority of those entering the field were hired at new firms.

Working in consulting – 89% of graduates had jobs within 3 months

After taking the #1 ranking in the Financial Times’ 2016 Global MBA ranking, INSEAD continued to put up strong numbers. One of the key numbers to look at when considering any business school is the number of graduates with jobs within 3 months of graduation, as this can tell you a great deal about the general “employability” of students from that university.

Great for Career Switchers

Of INSEAD’s 2016 graduating class, 80% of students changed careers in some way. INSEAD measures career change across three different dimensions: sector, function, and country. 27% of students last year changed careers in all three dimensions.

Slight Decrease in Base Salary

Despite strong placement numbers, base salary decreased by 1.9% last year, as compared to the previous year. The average base salary for the 2016 graduating class was US$103,700. According to Graham Hastie, INSEAD’s interim global director in 2016, this decrease was driven purely by exchange rate fluctuations. As INSEAD is highly global, many students returned to jobs in economies where exchange rates had fallen. If the impacts of currency fluctuations are removed, INSEAD’s base salary actually increased 1.7% in 2016 as compared to 2015.
