NYU Stern is Revolutionizing the MBA with it’s new 1-Year Focused Programs

Mar 21, 2018

For many clients, deciding to pursue an MBA is a difficult choice. One of the main challenges young professionals face is the trade-off of spending two years out of the market to get their MBAs.

Though there are many one-year programs, few are available in the United States. However, NYU Stern recently announced two different one-year MBA programs: the Tech MBA and the Fashion & Luxury MBA.

According to an email from NYU Stern we received yesterday,

“Stern’s new specialized MBAs are designed for MBA seekers committed to business careers in either technology or fashion and luxury. Both programs feature: Business core courses, Industry-focused core courses, Real-world experiential learning projects, An advisory board of industry leaders.”

The Tech MBA

The Tech MBA course is designed for students who are passionate about technology and who are looking to pursue careers in tech. Students study full time for one year, and the course focuses on four key components.

1. Business Core

The business core is designed to give students the strong business fundamentals you would experience in a traditional MBA. Classes include ones on topics such as Leadership, Economics, Strategy, and Corporate Finance.

2. Tech Core

The tech core is designed to give students access to classes on topics that are highly relevant for business leaders in the tech field. These classes have been designed in partnership with NYU’s Courante Institute of Mathematical Sciences. The tech core offers courses such as Software Engineering, Emerging Technologies, Tech Product Management, and Business Analytics.

3. Stern Solutions

Stern Solutions is NYU Stern’s experiential learning component for this MBA program. The program starts with an immersion in May, in which students are brought up to speed on the latest in the tech world. They will also participate on a live case with an industry partner.

The program continues during the year, and each semester, students will be required to participate in projects that allow students to apply what they are learning in the classroom at real companies, ranging from start-ups to established companies.

Furthermore, students will spend two weeks in January on a Silicon Valley trek, which will allow them to learn about this unique ecosystem and to network with companies in the area.

Finally, students who think of starting their own venture can apply to Stern’s Venture Fellowship program, which provides resources and mentoring to maximize their start-up’s potential.

4. Electives

Finally, students will also have access to a wide range of electives to complement the other components of the course.

The Fashion & Luxury MBA

The Fashion & Luxury MBA course is designed for students who are passionate about fashion and luxury goods and who are looking to pursue careers in these areas. Students study full time for one year, and the course focuses on four key components.

1. Business Core

The business core is designed to give students the strong business fundamentals you would experience in a traditional MBA. Classes include ones on topics such as Leadership, Economics, Strategy, and Corporate Finance.

2. Fashion & Luxury Core

The fashion & luxury core is designed to give students access to classes on topics that are highly relevant for business leaders in the fashion and luxury fields. The fashion & luxury core offers courses such as Retail Analytics, Consumer Behavior, Retail Operations and Merchandising, and Pricing.

Clubs and Community Offerings for 1-year MBA Students

Students in these one-year programs have the same access to Stern’s community. Stern focuses on IQ+EQ, and students will become lifelong members of Stern’s collaborative community.
