the 40 year old

Overview:

Our client found himself out of a job after his company closed its Brazilian office. He was determined to make a drastic career change and start over as an entrepreneur in Canada.

Strategy:

We advised our client to detail why he had never pursued a career as an entrepreneur, and his application centered around the difficulties he faced that led him to finance in the first place. After highlighting his numerous accomplishments, he outlined why now was the perfect moment for him to finally pursue his dream of starting his own company, how he planned to do that, and why Canada was the ideal location for him to start this venture. In the end, the story made a great case not only for why our client was pursuing an MBA at 40, but also highlighted why he would have been a great candidate at any age.

THE Low gmat finance professional

Overview:

Our client had a very standard experience in the financial markets. As an entry-level employee, she had little experience to demonstrate leadership capabilities and needed to find some way to stand out.

Strategy:

We advised this candidate to use her exceptional extracurricular activities to highlight her leadership skills, as her current position did not give her the chance to prove herself. Since she was targeting London Business School, we guided her to focus on stories that showed her extensive experience working with international cultures and on international business deals. We also used her extensive financial modeling knowledge to overcome her low GMAT score. Positioning herself as a more complete candidate, she was able to gain admission Round 2.

THE reapplicant engineer

Overview:

After a disappointing result the previous year, this client turned to us to help him shine as a reapplicant. His lack of traditional business experience and shy personality made it difficult for him to highlight the unique stories that made him shine, especially in the interview process.

Strategy:

After disappointing results working with a different top MBA consultant the year before, this candidate turned to us to help make his second shot at an MBA a success. His previous applications focused a great deal on his technical skills, which made it seem that he had little experience to help him succeed in an MBA. We advised him to refocus his application, and use his unique experience as a jumping off point to highlight his vast experience with leadership, management, and the real economy. After being invited for numerous interviews, we also helped this extremely reserved candidate feel more confident with his speaking skills and his story and helped him shine in his interviews, leading to several offers of admission.

Admitted to Booth with below 700 GMAT

Overview:

With average GMAT scores soaring at M7 business schools, getting into Chicago Booth, one of the most academically-focused MBA programs with a below 700 GMAT was a major challenge.

Strategy:

Bruno had an amazing track record of global leadership, having led projects alone in Turkey, Angola, Thailand, Argentina, and many other countries. To bolster his lower GMAT score, we focused on highlighting his previous academic excellence (such as graduating early from one of Brazil’s most rigorous degree programs) and on his outlier leadership experience.

Recent Career Switcher

Overview:

Just months before the Round 1 deadline, our client decided to capitalize on an opportunity to switch from traditional investment banking to fintech. Our challenge was to show he had built enough of a track record in his chosen industry by the deadline.

Strategy:

Given Fernando’s exceptional academic record and GMAT score, applying Round 1 made sense from a numbers perspective. However, with just a few months between starting a new job and applying, we knew we needed to focus on “quick win” projects to build strong connections with his organization’s superiors and to establish himself as an excellent professional in fintech. By capitalizing on his programming skills, he was able to pitch and lead the creation of a new fraud strategy under the close direction of the company’s CEO. By the time Round 1 deadlines rolled around, we had accumulated great stories that mixed leadership, initiative, and success as a fintech professional, using these and strong recommendation letters to justify his goals of remaining in the fintech segment.

Result:

Admitted to 6 of the 8 top 10 schools he applied to and waitlisted at the other 2

Showing Maturity for INSEAD

Overview:

Georgia came to us determined to start an MBA at INSEAD having only 1.5 years of work experience. Considering INSEAD’s average student has 5.5 years of work experience (and many as much as 10 years), our challenge was to show she had accumulated sufficient experience to benefit from the MBA and contribute to the INSEAD community.

Strategy:

Despite having changed careers from law to Private Equity upon graduation from university, Georgia had racked up an impressive list of accomplishments. Working at a smaller firm, she had led several projects alone and had significant, regular contact with her firm’s top executives. We thus leveraged this leadership experience to show that Georgia was ready to take the next step in her career, but needed an MBA to ensure she built the skills needed to succeed. Given INSEAD’s option to include 2 side letters, we also included letters from her firm’s CEO and from an INSEAD alumnus to reinforce she had “experience beyond her years” and a good cultural fit with the school.

Result:

Admitted to INSEAD with a €20,000 scholarship
