“This Is Not a Vacation”: IESE Director Paula Amorim on Fit, Rigor, and Standing Out

Aug 21, 2025

What does it really take to get into IESE Business School? How do you prove cultural fit when the culture is built on values, intensity, and purpose?

In this episode of The MBA Golden Buzzer, Paula Amorim, IESE MBA alumna and now Director of Admissions at IESE, breaks down what makes a standout application, what IESE values in future leaders, and how to avoid the most common mistakes applicants make.

Her advice is honest, direct, and deeply rooted in what makes IESE one of the most distinctive MBAs in the world.

The Program Is Intense and That’s the Point

IESE isn’t for everyone. The curriculum is academically rigorous, the peer learning culture demands constant preparation, and the school expects students to contribute from day one. In Paula’s words, “There is no free time in the life of an IESE student.”

Between classes, recruiting, and social commitments, students build not only academic knowledge but serious mental resilience. And that’s exactly the goal.

“If you’ve survived IESE,” she said, “you can probably survive many things in life.”

Fit Matters More Than You Think

Yes, your academics and test scores matter. But what makes an applicant truly stand out at IESE is cultural fit. Paula defines this as “an internal drive to use your career and influence to make the world a better place.”

IESE looks for people who are collaborative, globally minded, and willing to show up for others and themselves. And that is why IESE builds its admissions team from within.

“When you’ve been through the IESE MBA, you know what it takes,” she said. “We know how to recognize people who will thrive here.”

A Great Application Is Never Generic

Paula shared that the most disappointing applications are the ones that feel like they could have been written for any school. That’s why IESE values depth over polish and research over buzzwords.

A strong IESE essay reflects not only a clear career goal but also a thoughtful connection to the school’s mission. Paula’s advice? Do more than attend events or read the website. Talk to alumni. Build meaningful connections. Show that your interest in IESE is real and rooted in research.

The GRE vs GMAT Debate

IESE accepts both tests equally, but Paula warns applicants not to “hide behind the GRE.” Too many candidates treat it as an easier way out and settle for a low score.

IESE sees test prep as a proxy for commitment. “The exams are part of the mental preparation for this program,” she said. “They help you build the stamina and resilience that you’ll need here.”

How IESE Evaluates Leadership and International Readiness

Paula is clear: having international experience or leadership roles before the MBA is a plus, not a requirement. What matters more is your ability to operate in diverse environments and your potential to contribute meaningfully to the community.

Whether through work, community engagement, or personal experiences, applicants should demonstrate emotional intelligence, curiosity, and a willingness to stretch beyond their comfort zones.

GOLDEN BUZZER TIP: Build Real Relationships With the Community

Paula’s top tip for applicants? Connect meaningfully. Whether it is with alumni, students, or your admissions officer, real engagement—not surface-level LinkedIn messages—can make your application stronger and more memorable.

“When we see someone who’s really taken the time to understand our culture and build relationships,” she said, “it stands out immediately.”
