Everyone has a story running in the background of their mind.
Sometimes it sounds like:
I’m not ready yet
I’m not the kind of person who gets into schools like that
If I were really qualified, I wouldn’t feel this unsure
These are not facts. They are stories. And like all stories, they can be revised.
The stories we tell ourselves shape how we show up in the world. They influence our goals, our confidence, and even the decisions we don’t realize we’re making.
That’s why one of the most powerful things you can do during the MBA application process is to pause and ask yourself, “Is this story helping me — or holding me back?”
What’s the Story You’re Telling Yourself Right Now?
We all carry narratives that were written over time. Some were shaped by past experiences. Others were inherited from family, culture, or old environments.
These narratives are often so familiar that we don’t question them. But if a story is keeping you small, stuck, or afraid to try, it may be time to write a new one.
For example:
- If your story is, “I don’t have a traditional background,” you might avoid applying to top programs even if your experience is rich and unique
- If your story is “I always mess up under pressure,” you might enter interviews already expecting to fail
- If your story is “I have to be perfect to succeed,” you might obsess over every word and burn out before you ever submit
These stories may feel true, but they often aren’t.
Rewriting Your Narrative
You don’t need to ignore your fears or pretend everything has been easy. But you do get to decide which parts of your story get to lead.
Try this exercise:
- Write down a limiting belief you have about yourself
- Then write the full, balanced version of the story
- Now write the version where you are the one who grows
Here’s an example:
- Limiting belief: I didn’t take on enough leadership at work
- Balanced truth: I took initiative in smaller ways that mattered and am now looking for ways to expand
- Empowered story: I’ve learned what kind of leader I want to be and I’m ready to grow into it during my MBA
This simple shift can change how you write your essays, how you carry yourself in interviews, and how you pursue your goals.
For example, one of our clients came to us with a strong track record in the nonprofit world, but they believed this nontraditional background would be a disadvantage in the MBA process. They worried their resume didn’t “look like” everyone else’s.
Through our work together, they began to see their story differently: not as a weakness to explain away, but as a strength rooted in curiosity, resilience, and the ability to create impact across industries. They had led scrappy teams, built partnerships with limited resources, and shaped strategy in spaces where change was slow and stakes were high.
Once we reframed their narrative around the unique lens they brought to leadership and problem-solving, everything shifted. Their essays became more compelling, their confidence grew, and ultimately, they earned acceptances to multiple top-tier programs. What they once saw as their biggest liability became the very thing that set them apart.
Why This Matters for Your MBA Application
MBA programs are not looking for perfection. They are looking for clarity, self-awareness, and growth. The most compelling candidates are those who have done the work to understand themselves and who can articulate their story with honesty and purpose.
That starts with you.
Not the version of you that you think they want. The real you. The one who has faced doubt and moved forward anyway. The one who is still writing the next chapter.
