Juggling Life and Your MBA Application: How to Manage It All Without Burnout

Feb 18, 2025

Applying to business school is one of the most demanding challenges you’ll face. Between managing a full-time job, preparing for tests, crafting essays, and finding time for interviews, it can feel like you’re juggling too many balls at once.

And if you’re not careful, burnout can creep in.

I often tell clients that the MBA application process is a marathon with multiple sprints along the way. To succeed, you’ll need to pace yourself, prioritize wisely, and, most importantly, maintain a sense of balance.

Here’s how to do it all without losing yourself in the process.

1. Set a Realistic Schedule

The first step to balance is creating a clear plan. Break down the application process into manageable tasks, assigning specific deadlines for each. Be realistic about how much time you can commit daily or weekly without sacrificing your well-being.

For example:

  • Allocate evenings for small essay drafts and edits and test prep.
  • Dedicate weekends for larger writing/brainstorming tasks and/or mock GMAT test reviews.
  • Build in buffer time for unexpected delays. They will happen.

We use a comprehensive project management tool with our clients to ensure they always know what to do and are on track. If you’re not using one, we suggest taking advantage of tools like Google Calendar or Trello to track your progress and stay organized.

TOP TIP: AI can be really helpful in creating this timeline. If you input the schools you’re applying for, their deadlines, any deadlines you need to keep in mind, and the general tasks you need to complete, services like ChatGPT can create great timelines that you can then just tweak.

2. Know When to Sprint

While the MBA process is a marathon, certain moments require intense focus. For example, the weeks leading up to a test or an application deadline may demand extra effort. Plan for these “sprints” by lightening your workload or personal commitments in advance.

The key is to treat these sprints as temporary, not your default mode. After a sprint, intentionally schedule downtime to recover and recalibrate.

3. Prioritize Self-Care

I have seen so many past clients sacrifice sleep, exercise, and social time to cram in extra study hours or polish another essay. But ignoring self-care will quickly lead to diminishing returns and a feeling of overwhelm and burnout.

Some simple ways to prioritize your well-being:

  • Sleep: Make sure you are sleeping a reasonable amount of time on a consistent basis. Rested minds are more productive.
  • Exercise: Even a short walk can reduce stress and boost brain power.
  • Social Time: Spending time with loved ones helps you recharge emotionally.

Think of self-care as an investment in your productivity, not a distraction from your goals.

4. Learn to Say No

During the application process, you’ll need to set boundaries. This might mean turning down extra responsibilities at work, skipping some social events (though not all of them!), or postponing non-essential projects.

5. Find Your Support System

You don’t have to do this alone. Lean on a support network that includes friends, family, mentors, or even fellow applicants. Sharing your journey with others who understand the process can make it feel less overwhelming.

If you’re working with an MBA consultant, use them as a sounding board to navigate tough moments and keep your goals on track.

6. Celebrate Small Wins

The MBA journey is long, and it’s easy to get caught up in what’s still left to do. Take time to acknowledge your progress. Finished your first essay draft? Nailed a practice test? Treat yourself to something small—an evening off, a favorite meal, or a fun activity.

These small celebrations keep you motivated and remind you how far you’ve come.

When it all feels like too much, step back and remember why you’re doing this. Your goal isn’t just to get into a top MBA program—it’s to grow, learn, and take the next step in your career.

A balanced approach isn’t just about surviving the application process; it’s about thriving during it.
