Artificial intelligence is everywhere, but what does it actually mean to study it as a working professional without a technical degree?
In this episode of The MBA Golden Buzzer, Ebi Eyesan, former Ellin Lolis Consulting client and experienced product and delivery leader, shares her journey into an accelerated AI and machine learning certificate program at the University of Texas.
The goal: to build real-world fluency in AI without pivoting away from her business foundation.
Yes, It’s Technical. But It’s Also Doable.
Ebi expected concepts. What she got was code. The program kicked off with a crash course in Python and quickly moved into neural networks, supervised and unsupervised learning, and deep learning applications.
“I had no background in hardcore coding or data science,” she said. “But once I got into it, I actually started to enjoy it.”
From customer churn prediction to fraud detection, every module included hands-on projects with real datasets and clear business applications. And the program’s support structure, including a personal program manager, made the experience challenging but manageable.

The Mindset Shift Was Just as Important
Beyond the technical knowledge, Ebi says the biggest transformation was how she now thinks about problem-solving.
“Now I start with the data. What does it tell us? What assumptions can we test?”
That shift changed how she approaches team leadership, decision-making, and communication. She now bridges conversations between technical and non-technical stakeholders and presents complex data analysis in a way that business leaders can act on.
“That’s the real win,” she said. “Not just understanding the models, but knowing how to make them meaningful for the business.”
The ROI Starts Before You Even Graduate
Though she hasn’t formally transitioned into a new role yet, Ebi says the program has already opened new doors.
She now sees a range of roles—AI data product manager, machine learning project lead, and more—that align with her experience and this new technical fluency. And she’s already applying those skills in her current role through smarter experimentation, capacity planning, and executive presence.
“It’s made me a more credible voice in the room,” she said. “And it’s setting me up for opportunities I wouldn’t have had access to before.”
GOLDEN BUZZER TIP: Know Your Why Before You Enroll
Ebi’s advice for anyone considering a program like this? Be honest about your goals, your time, and your bandwidth.
“It will stretch you,” she said. “But it’s absolutely worth it if you know what you want to get out of it.”
