The Courage to Pivot

Jul 30, 2025

There is strength in sticking to a goal. But there is also strength in knowing when to shift your approach.

Whether you are studying for the GMAT, finalizing your school list, or mapping out your timeline, the MBA application journey often asks for something we don’t always expect. Flexibility.

And sometimes, the most powerful move you can make is to pivot.

Not because you are giving up. But because you are paying attention.

Pivots Are a Sign of Strength, Not Struggle

Many people resist making a change during the application process because it feels like failure. But pivots are not failures.

They are intentional decisions based on new information.

You might discover that the GRE is a better fit for your learning style or test-taking strengths.
You might realize that a school you added out of obligation no longer aligns with your career goals.
You might find that you need to shift your timeline to apply with the clarity and energy you deserve.

Each of these moments is an opportunity to step more fully into what works for you.

Listening to What Isn’t Working

Pivots start with honesty. Not judgment.

If you’ve been grinding through a test with no improvement, that is not a sign that you are not smart enough. It may simply be a sign that this tool is not the right one for you.

If researching a school leaves you feeling uninspired, that is not a sign that you are not ambitious. It might just mean your values are pulling you in a different direction.

The more honestly you listen to what is working and what is not, the easier it becomes to make strategic changes.

For example, one of our clients came to us after spending months stuck in GMAT prep. Despite trying multiple strategies, their scores plateaued. They felt defeated. But after a conversation, they made the decision to switch to the Executive Assessment. Within weeks, their confidence improved. They eventually submitted with a strong score and were admitted to Columbia. The shift did not derail their journey. It saved it, and they ended up at a school they loved.

Pivots Require Clarity, Not Certainty

You do not need to have every answer to make a change. You only need to be clear about what is not serving you and open to exploring what might.

If your current path is not getting you closer to your goals, you are allowed to choose a new one.

The MBA process is not about proving that you never had doubts. It is about showing that you know how to adapt, reflect, and lead yourself through change.
