2. How should I answer the essay questions?
Writing any admissions essay is a tough task. However, with the right tips, you’ll be well on your way to crafting essays that get you admitted to Rice’s MBA program.
2.1. Short Answer 1
In 100 words or less, please share your short-term career goals.
First of all, if you’re having trouble figuring out what your post-MBA goals are, we’ve prepared this post to help you decipher this essential part of the application process!
Once you’ve settled on a clear short-term (and long-term, you’ll need that in a minute!) goal, it’s time to start your essay. Start by stating a clear job title and industry you want to pursue. Then, also share why you want to pursue this goal and how you will make an impact in this role. Passion is contagious, so sharing why you want to pursue the goal you state is essential to standing out!
Finally, dedicate a short amount of space to sharing how this will prepare you to reach your long-term goals.
2.1. Short Answer 2
In 100 words or less, please share your long-term career goals.
This essay will build upon the previous essay! Start by stating a clear job title and industry you want to pursue. Then, also share why you want to pursue this goal and how you will make an impact in this role. Passion is contagious, so sharing why you want to pursue the goal you state is essential to standing out!
Finally, if you have any extra space, you could briefly mention very top-level reasons why Rice is the best business school for you to pursue your goals.
2.3. Required Essay 1 Tips
While we know a picture is worth 1,000 words, in 500 words or less tell us the story of a photo of your choosing that has significant value in your life experiences. Please feel free to share your photo!
You can complete this essay via a traditional written response (500-word limit) or via a video response (one to three-minute time limit).
This essay should show Rice’s admissions team who you are and what makes you tick.
When considering how to approach this essay, first take a look back at your personal and professional experiences to identify the “tipping points” in your life. What has led you to the point you are at now? What has made you YOU?
Then, describe not only what these experiences were, but also how they impacted who you are and your life choices. Given that you’re only allowed to choose 1 photo, make sure you choose something that represents a clear story (that can be told in STAR format!) to share.
Though you can focus on a professional experience here, I would strongly suggest a personal or extracurricular experience. After you choose your example, we recommend you use the STAR methodology to tell your reader what happened in the clearest and most high-impact way possible. Remember: the UNC admissions committee doesn’t want to read about what happened, they want to experience it. Additionally, as you craft your response, make sure to clearly articulate what the “positive impact” was and who benefitted from it.
Using the STAR methodology and good storytelling techniques are key to ensuring your example jumps off the page and makes you stand out. This approach will help the admissions committee understand your thought process, the steps you took, and how your efforts led to a tangible improvement for an individual, group, or organization.
If you have space at the end, share how you plan to contribute what you’ve learned from this experience with your classmates at Rice.
Finally, there is no “right” answer when it comes to whether you should choose the photo or video essay. There is no advantage to choosing one over the other, so choose the one you feel most comfortable with.
TOP TIP: In our experience, the average person can speak between 100-150 words per minute, so aim to create a script that is somewhere between 100-450 words. You may read out your script while recording. However, you may want to condense your script to a set of bullet points and practice delivering your answer more spontaneously to show more personality on camera.
2.3. Optional Essay Tips
If you have any additional information for the admissions committee or if you wish to clarify any aspect of your application (including breaks in employment, your choice of recommendation providers, your past academic performance, etc.), you may submit an additional, optional essay. (500 word limit)
As with nearly all elite business schools, Rice does not want to see a summary of your profile or a restatement of why you want to attend Rice.
However, if you have extenuating circumstances that merit additional explanation (a good overview of what kind of circumstances qualify and how to write a strong optional essay can be found here), make sure to explain them clearly and directly.
